Keeping It Simple… by Wink Lamiroy
Keeping it simple … conscious and fun.
Eating well should be a joy for the whole family. With everyone so busy these days, constant distractions, with so many labels and trends floating around food – it can become confusing – vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, mindful, raw, clean, paleo… the list goes on… it was with this in mind that i decided to have a simple food day. A day that made the most of our time together as a family and revolved around the kids… introducing them to where their food comes from – and how it is prepared… while making fires and playing on the beach!
So for this month’s Bioglan Superfoods post, I wanted to make the most of our special time away on holiday. Simple, honest shopping and cooking without any fuss…
We found a broccoli farmer, thats it, thats how he earns his cash, and he was so proud of his beautiful, lush dark green veg, it was really cool watching the kids get their heads around this… “what just broccoli mama?” I guess they are used to big supermarkets with staff packing the shelves without too much thought… but not this delightful old boy, he had real pride in his produce, and you know what, it tasted so much better for it.
We met another old girl who was wonderful! she was so sweet with Hux and Raphi, she grinned from ear to ear and really encouraged them to inspect, sniff and feel the oranges before buying them. She then gave them a free tangerine and cupped their faces one at a time and kisses their forehead. I could almost see their confidence and pride grow as they walked away with their bag of juicy oranges… without putting any labels on it … this simple form of humans interacting, exchanging thoughts and gestures around food felt genuine, mindful, conscious … right.
Now for the fish…
Hux and Raphi are good with fish, we live in Cornwall and are lucky enough that our great friend Johnny Wish (the kids had problems pronouncing “fish” when they were young – so ‘wish’ it stayed) happens to be a fish man, he delivers fresh fish to us twice a week, the kids get involved and choose, watch john fillet and listen to him tell us where and when the fish was caught and also inspiring us with his recipe ideas… so on the whole they were very comfortable in the hectic fish market- although there were a few new ‘faces’ they had not seen before – the moray eels were particularly striking!
The colours and fresh smell of the sea were incredible while the fish mongers had twinkly eyes, loads of laughter and banter and it was immediately clear that they were totally into their produce… their pride made us feel like we were one step closer to casting our own line!
We decided on a small bag of mussels, two super fresh sea bass, and some prawns, along with some limes, parsley , garlic, sweet onion, avocado, a giant tomato, oranges and grapes, fresh bread, olive oil, some lethal looking chilli oil, Bioglan Superfoods Supergreens, a little pot of local honey, water and a bottle of vinho verde, i think that was about it… ah and in our apartment there happened to be some Jamie Oliver chilli flakes so they got thrown into the mix…
I starting to unpack our market haul, Sam started to collect stones to surround our fire…
Preparing the grill, and escaping the waves…..
I really didn’t have a huge plan, but had an idea to make a sort of version of a salsa verde, dressing, marinade kinda tasty thing!! you know that old favourite!
I really do love adding a tablespoon of Bioglan Superfoods Green Boost into things like dips and dressings, it doesn’t have a over powering taste, is packed full of goodness and really does help to keep us all feeling well (especially at this time of the year). i kinda feel like its a no brainer!
So I poured a big old glug of olive oil, added the juice of a couple of fresh limes, two finely chopped garlic cloves, a bunch of chopped parsley, a tbsp Bioglan Superfoods Supergreens, one tbsp honey, pinch or two of salt and i recommend chilli if you are not sharing with kids…. man this tastes good!
I gave the fish a luxurious marinade in this Bioglan Superfoods dressing. The two fish did not seem too impressed, but I thought they looked great… dressed for dinner!
This green sauce went everywhere – all over our hot prawns… I also tossed it in with the giant tomato, avocado and sweet onion salad and Hux kept dunking his bread in it! fantastic, i kept thinking with each dunk he was boosting his little system with nutrient dense greens, rich in phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals… Blooming marvellous!!
Pouring some wine into our mussel pot whilst protecting Raphael’s modesty! We’re cooking the mussels in about 2 parts sea water 1 part fresh water, a good glug of white wine, half a diced sweet onion, a few garlic cloves and fresh parsley a tablespoon of Bioglan Superfoods Green Boost (well why not!). Bring to the boil and let simmer until the onions are transparent. Throw in your mussels, pop a lid on the pan, give them a good shake in the pan every min or so and once the shells are open they are ready to eat! so so easy…
Not too shabby…
Back to the shoreline – A bit of a scrub in the sea, clean!
So as the light was fading, and the waves were crashing – Sam took hold of the phone – and snapped a couple of pictures… fuzzy – yes, a bit soft… indeed!- honest – certainly! A few last pieces of fish from the grill…
… one last run around and then home for us… feeling nourished and fully satisfied… you know it really was so nice all getting involved, choosing our veg and fish, making up our multi use dressing out of just a few ingredients, lighting fires, beach, waves, sunset… it’s all pretty simple really – as it should be… X
